Back to fundamentals of research: Interdisciplinarity

Università di Bologna

09 ott 2024 13.30-18.30

How can universities foster, support and govern interdisciplinarity in a virtuous balance with disciplinary knowledge? How can evaluation and funding of interdisciplinary research be improved? How to overcome the obstacles to career development for researchers engaged in interdisciplinary research?

In a hyperspecialized scientific landscape where knowledge organization is discipline-based and the impact of research outputs is often limited to a certain area of a specific field, inter-, multi- and trans-disciplinarity can be regarded as new forms of knowledge production that play a crucial role facing the unprecedented societal challenges of the contemporary world. Researchers, research institutions, policy makers and funders are aware that collaboration across disciplines and across sectors is key to addressing complex questions and acknowledge the scientific and societal benefits of interdisciplinary approaches.

The current debate investigates epistemological issues of interdisciplinarity, highlighting its increasing importance in research policies but also the challenges associated to the implementation of interdisciplinary research.

The event will foster an extensive discussion on interdisciplinarity by bringing together institutional stakeholders and researchers, with the aim of exploring opportunities, challenges and best practices as well as the diversity, richness and impacts of interdisciplinary research practices and methodologies.

When

The event will take place online and in-person on Wednesday, October 9th 2024, at Aula Giorgio Prodi, from 1:30 pm to 6:30 pm.
